It has been an interesting day because we created a video today to help older adults do yoga at home. It is part of a research project I initiated to create research to demonstrate empirically what I see anecdotally, that yoga changes people for the better. I see this as I teach classes and watch how people become more peaceful, stronger, clearer and calmer. It has been a big job creating the research format and doing the lit review, the meetings with the other people who joined me out of a love of yoga and or a love of older adults.
What was interesting today is that we shot the video for Seniors to have a DVD that they can use to practice at their own home. I was the teacher of this video, and joining me were Jay Henry who is 98 and Kay who is going on 70. They are ongoing students so I am familiar with them. I enjoy teaching both of them and the other students in my ongoing classes. What was interesting is that I realized that so much of how I teach is based upon who is in class. In this case with the video, I have no way yet of knowing who will be using it. They are mysterious theoretical students. This was quite a stressful process trying to meet the needs of absent students. I wanted so much to address their needs, but was only guessing until we actually meet the research subjects and start teaching them how to use yoga to improve their quality of life and their balance (hopefully!). I realized that I am following the advice that I tell new yoga instructors; “teach to who is there in class, observe what is happening in class to determine how to cue poses and what to do next, be in the moment to observe what the students need.” I am glad that I now know, without a doubt, that I am in the habit of following my own advice (always a good thing). It was like flying blind to try to instruct a yoga class without seeing the students. So it created a bit of stress, and a bit of personal insight. I hope it also created a useful and beneficial video for older adults to find the joy and peace of Yoga. I believe it will be worth the work and effort. It is the first time I can ever remember spending 3 hours doing yoga and coming out of it feeling stressed! I guess I am not meant to be in the spotlight. I much prefer the format of a typical yoga class or individual sessions where I can interact and react to the moment by moment feedback that I observe from another person. That is living, and invigorating. I am so grateful to have the privilege of teaching yoga. It feels good to make a difference.

Very interesting and amusing subject. I read with great pleasure.
I liked it. So much useful material. I read with great interest.
Are you a professional journalist? You write very well.
I love to write and so this is a nice format for me. I teach yoga classes here in southern Indiana and talk about these ideas of gratitude and peace and relationship and acceptance in my class. My students seems to benefit from it and so I am glad that it seems to be spreading though the web. I am not a professional writer, but a writer and reader at heart. Thank you for the compliment and feel free to add your own thoughts on these subjects to my web-site.
Namaste,
Lezlie

nice post. thanks.
i learned all my yoga skills just by watching yoga videos online and just immitating what they do `;’
Wow, that is a hard way to learn yoga I think because the people on the video never know what you are actually doing and whether you are keeping up with them. You must love yoga to keep up with it by yourself. I give you kudos.!! Once you are hooked by yoga, it seems that the interest grows and grows. Let me know if you have any yoga questions. I have been teaching for several years and would be happy to answer any questions that you might have about poses or meditation or techniques etc. Have a beautiful day, and keep doing yoga! Namaste,
